Tokyo, Japan (July 21st, 2017) -- Dwango Co., Ltd. has announced that the 2D animation production software “OpenToonz” which they started distributing last March as an open source software program has been used in the production of Hiromasa Yonebayashi’s latest animated feature film Mary and The Witch’s Flower which came out in theaters on July 8th.

“OpenToonz” is a 2D animation software program based on “Toonz” which was first developed by the Italian developer Digital Video S.p.A. After Dwango acquired “Toonz” it was then developed/distributed as an open source software program that anybody can use and modify free of charge. OpenToonz has several features which include functions customized by the longtime Toonz user Studio Ghibli. Dwango has developed visual effects that utilize their artificial intelligence technology and plugins that enable any user to add effects.
Dwango has also made additional modifications based on on-site feedbacks.
In Mary and The Witch’s Flower, OpenToonz was used in the following processes.

＜Processes that utilized OpenToonz＞

■OpenToonz’s “Pallete” function and the preview function (enables the user to instantly preview the canvas with character and background layers stacked on top of each other) was utilized in the color designing process where adjustments are made to the character’s color to match the background.

■During the cinematography process, the “Magical Bubbles” that appear in the movie were created using a special effect that generates the rainbow patterns on the bubbles.

■The scanning tool GTS which was distributed simultaneously with OpenToonz was used during the scanning process where animations drawn on papers are scanned.

Mary and The Witch’s Flower is the first animated film to incorporate OpenToonz in their production. Dwango aims to contribute to the development and improvement of OpenToonz by listening to the opinions from Japan’s animation industry.
